Chemical dependency impacts different people in different ways. That’s why Cumberland Heights offers a range of treatment programs – to meet the diverse and individual needs of each person seeking help. We use a holistic approach to treatment, which addresses the spiritual, emotional and physical aspects of addiction. Our programs emphasize the time-tested 12 Steps of Recovery, originated by Alcoholics Anonymous over 65 years ago.

Through our comprehensive programs, Cumberland Heights recognizes that each individual’s path to recovery is unique. So each treatment plan is customized to your (or your family member’s) personal needs.

Traditional Program
Traditional residential treatment is the preferred approach for people whose illness indicates progression. The Traditional Program lasts a minimum of 30 days and offers a quiet, caring environment in which patients can focus solely on their recovery. Treatment begins with a personal assessment to determine the most appropriate services for a lasting recovery.

Services include:
• Medically supervised detoxification
• Individual and group counseling
• AA/NA orientation and participation
• Spiritual counseling
• A family program and family counseling as needed
• Aftercare
• Experiential therapy
(ropes course, equine therapy)

The Women’s Program
The Women’s Program is a residential program tailored to the sensitive issues women face when coping with recovery from addiction. These issues range from relationships with family and children to trauma to body image concerns. The program emphasizes privacy and individual care.

Relapse
The Relapse Prevention Program is for individuals who have suffered relapse after maintaining some period of recovery from chemical dependence. It offers a specialized process guided by trained counselors to allow discovery of what contributed to the relapse. Specific obstacles to an individual’s recover are identified, as well as examination of the underlying issues that contribute to the relapse process. These issues may include past or present dysfunction in the family, childhood abuse, abandonment, or other trauma.

Additionally, the program helps participants identify individual relapse warning signs and learn specific skills that will aid in preventing additional relapses. If needed, time is spent understanding substitute behavioral addictions that can contribute to post-treatment relapses. Such substitute addictions may include addiction to food, sex, work or gambling.

Understanding what causes or “triggers” a relapse is the first step in defeating relapse and resuming the journey to lasting recovery. The Relapse Prevention Program offers a supportive environment and the particular assistance needed to understand and consciously disarm the unresolved issues that block a person’s ability to move forward in recovery.

Prior to discharge and individualized relapse prevention plan is designed with each patient to further strengthen the individual’s recovery plan.

First Step/Intensive Outpatient Program
In special circumstances when a shorter stay is an alternative identified in the initial assessment, this abbreviated residential program allows those who need it the opportunity to receive specialized treatment for addiction and return to work, school or home quickly. The program lasts up to 14 days and includes medical detoxification, individual and group counseling, and interactive education groups focused on developing recovery strategies. These strategies will help the patient succeed in the intensive outpatient and aftercare services that follow. There are also family education groups that begin the process of family healing in preparation for the full family program in the outpatient setting.

Outpatient Program
Cumberland Heights’ Outpatient Program is designed for people of all ages whose needs and schedules vary. It is a good choice for people who may be in the early stages of dependency or are experiencing problems with alcohol or drug use. Services include interactive education groups, as well as individual, group and family counseling.

Youth Programs
Addiction in adolescents progresses much faster than in adults. This program, available for young men and women ages 13-18, offers both outpatient and residential treatment, and emphasizes family participation.

Youth residential
When a young person is admitted, a complete physical and psychosocial evaluation is performed to determine an individual treatment plan. This plan addresses family dynamics, peer relationships and the consequences of addiction, and includes:

• Medically supervised detoxification
• Individual and group counseling
• AA/NA participation
• Spiritual counseling
• Family involvement
• Continuing care/aftercare
• Experiential therapy (ropes course, equine therapy)
• Therapeutic recreation

Youth outpatient
Cumberland Heights’ youth outpatient services are for those in the early stages of chemical abuse or dependency. Treatment is scheduled so young people can continue their school and outside responsibilities and ranges from low intensity therapy (generally 3-hour sessions twice a week) to intensive therapy (held three hours a day, four days a week).

Extended Care
Adult Extended Care Program
Cumberland Heights' Adult Extended Care Program offers new therapeutic options for our adult patients.  This intensive program is based on a three-phase continuum of care, affording patients a longer period of time to address core issues and build a foundation for recovery:

Phase 1: Assessment, detoxification, stabilization and orientation.
Phase 2: Primary Treatment
Phase 3: Extended Care/transitional living

Patients enterting Phase 3 live in one of our two lodge-style homes while continuing therapy on our campus. Extended care gives the individual time to begin to identify and address core psychological issues that may sabotage ongoing abstinence/recovery.  Repairing damage caused by addiction is a major goal of the program; therefore, families are encouraged to participate in this phase of care.

Professional's Track
The Adult Extended Care Program also features a track for the professional seeking recovery and attempting to reconstruct his or her professional and personal life.  We work collaboratively with professional assistance programs or licensing boards to ensure complete compliance with any and all recommendations.  Our goal is to help the professional return to his or her career with a solid foundation for lifelong recovery.
