This one-hour training serves as an introduction or a review of The ASAM Criteria. The most widely used patient placement criteria in the Substance Use Disorder treatment field, the ASAM Criteria utilizes a dimensional model to assess individuals in a holistic biopsychosocial manner in order to help them begin and move through the continuum of care most effectively. Levels of care, dimensions, and risk ratings will be reviewed, as well as the ASAM definition of imminent danger. Emphasis will be placed on Levels 2.1 through 3.7. The paper assessment of the ASAM Criteria released in February 2022 will also be reviewed.

Learning Objectives:

  1. The participant will describe the rationale for the use of the ASAM Criteria.
  2. The participant will name the Dimensions of Care, describing what is involved with each area, including determination of risk level.
  3. The participant will name the Levels of Care, describing the general elements of each and how the Dimensions of Care/Risk Levels determine placement.
  4. The participant will review and discuss examples of documentation that reflect clinical summarizing of Dimensions of Care, Risk Levels, recommendations based on these, and the use of these to begin to create an individualized treatment plan.
