Our Clinical Approach

Therapies That Work

The treatment methods we use are carefully chosen and supported by years of research and patient success. These approaches, known as evidence-based practices, are important in addiction treatment because they ensure care is both effective and personalized. By using proven methods, clinicians can adapt treatments to fit each person’s unique background, needs, and preferences. Following these guidelines helps create better results for clients, giving them a strong foundation for long-term recovery.

Evidence-Based Practices at Cumberland Heights

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has proven highly effective for recovery because it helps people change their thoughts and habits. Central to CBT is the concept that our thoughts, rather than external events, affect the way we feel and behave.

Used in both individual and group settings, Dialectical Behavior Treatment (DBT) treatment has been proven to be highly effective in treating mood disorders and suicidal thoughts. It also helps address and change harmful behaviors, including self-harm, eating disorders, and substance use.

At Cumberland Heights, we recognize that every individual’s experience with trauma is unique. That’s why we take an integrated, personalized approach to trauma stabilization. By combining evidence-based therapies tailored to each patient’s specific needs, we address the physical, emotional, and psychological impacts of trauma. This comprehensive care model ensures a supportive and effective path toward healing and recovery.

Twelve-Step Facilitation (TSF) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach introduced in 1986, and is known to be as effective as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI). TSF helps individuals recognize addiction as a disease and prepares them for active participation in 12-Step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. It includes pre-step work and psychoeducational components based on each step, fostering readiness and understanding. By promoting engagement in meetings and building a supportive recovery network, TSF offers long-term benefits, helping individuals maintain lasting sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing is a powerful approach designed to inspire positive behavior change by nurturing your internal motivation. This method not only encourages you to explore solutions to challenges but also incorporates the concept of the stages of change. It helps individuals identify their current stage in the change process, understand what it means, and take meaningful steps forward.

When a person becomes reliant on opioid medications like oxycodone (OxyContin) or hydrocodone (Vicodin), their brain operates differently. It becomes accustomed to an artificial supply of certain neurotransmitters and stops producing them on its own. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the administration of medicine to restore the brain’s chemical balance.

Our Model of Care

Cumberland Heights’ Model of Care focuses on guiding individuals from addiction to recovery through meaningful connections and the principles of Twelve-Step facilitation. This approach emphasizes person-centered care, addressing trauma and mental health, and leveraging internal motivation. By building trust, patients internalize recovery principles, reconnect with themselves and others, and sustain their journey through ongoing actions. The model includes relapse prevention, identifying triggers, and comprehensive support through extended care, outpatient services, and immersive recovery experiences to ensure a well-round approach to treatment. Dedicated to lifelong recovery management, our model also includes recovery care management through Alumni Care, peer-led support groups, and community engagement for sustained recovery.

Supporting Patient Growth Through Research

As leaders in the field, it is our responsibility to invest in the future of addiction treatment, and that starts with recognizing how our treatments affect our patients. The Research Institute at Cumberland Heights exists to increase our insight into process improvements, and helps us identify which treatments are most appropriate for each person we treat.

Experiential Therapies

Experiential services at Cumberland Heights, such as art therapy, adventure therapy, equine-assisted therapy, and mindfulness practices, play a significant role in enhancing our traditional therapeutic approaches.

These services help individuals engage in the treatment process on multiple levels by facilitating emotional expression, reducing stress, and improving self-awareness and self-esteem. For instance, creative therapies like art and music allow individuals to express feelings that might be difficult to articulate verbally.

By incorporating these hands-on experiences, we are able to significantly deepen the impact of our therapeutic process, providing practical coping mechanisms, and ultimately supporting a more comprehensive and lasting recovery.
