Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Reframing Thoughts, Rebuilding Lives

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is highly effective for recovery because it helps individuals recognize how their thoughts influence their emotions—and ultimately, their behaviors.

What is CBT at Cumberland Heights?

At Cumberland Heights, we use CBT to empower people to shift harmful thinking patterns, develop healthier habits, and build a foundation for lasting recovery.  Recovery from substance use and mental health disorders involves much more than just stopping certain behaviors—it requires changing how you think about yourself, your experiences, and your relationships. Addiction and mental health disorders are often fueled by negative thoughts and self-defeating beliefs. CBT helps slow down this cycle, allowing individuals to pause before reacting to a trigger or urge.

At Cumberland Heights, CBT is used to help clients monitor the thoughts that arise before and during the urge to use substances or to make choices that worsen our mental health. We explore questions like:

  • What were you thinking?
  • What did you tell yourself?
  • How did you feel, and what did you think about doing next?

This process brings awareness to automatic, distorted thoughts—the negative “tape” that plays in the background. CBT teaches you to challenge these beliefs (“Is it really true that I’m worthless?”) and replace them with more accurate, affirming perspectives.

Our approach is present-focused and goal-oriented. Rather than dwelling on the past, we help clients develop the skills they need to manage current challenges and prevent relapse.

The Benefits of CBT for Addiction and Mental Health Issues

Incorporating CBT into a treatment plan helps replace destructive habits with healthy behaviors. While some people associate therapy with long-term talk sessions, CBT is designed to be structured and time-limited, making it both effective and efficient.

Through CBT, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how your mind works, and how to use recovery tools to support you in healthier thoughts and choices. With the right tools and support, you can break free from the cycle of illness and move toward a more positive, fulfilling life.

Why Should You Choose Cumberland Heights?

Cumberland Heights has significantly invested in our ability to monitor long-term outcomes for clients who complete our Tennessee inpatient treatment program. We have joined the SUD Outcomes Network, a shared cloud-hosted database that tracks program success using a series of measurements to assess how well people continue using the tools they learned in treatment and actively participate in their recovery journey.

By strategically using data, our treatment professionals can identify how well our programming improves people’s lives and which solutions are most effective. We’ve published these findings in a summary report detailing our efforts to improve practices and survey post-discharge results.

In 2022, Cumberland Heights earned the top spot on Newsweek magazine’s America’s Best Addiction Treatment Centers list for the second time. Newsweek’s ranking highlights the nation’s leading facilities based on service quality, reputation, and accreditation compared to in-state competition.
