Effective Trauma Therapies for Addiction Recovery
Trauma is deeply personal and often intertwined with addiction, making each individual’s journey to recovery unique. Our approach prioritizes gently helping you identify and stabilize symptoms from trauma so that a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs can be created.
Trauma Stabilization Therapies We Use
At Cumberland Heights, we recognize that every individual’s experience with trauma is unique. That’s why we take an integrated, personalized approach to trauma stabilization. By combining evidence-based therapies tailored to each patient’s specific needs, we address the physical, emotional, and psychological impacts of trauma. This comprehensive care model ensures a supportive and effective path toward healing and recovery.
The Seeking Safety treatment therapy was developed to address the dual diagnosis of substance use disorder and PTSD. Seeking Safety offers 25 treatment topics focusing on cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal issues. Treatment is based on five principles: safety as the priority of treatment; integrated treatment of PTSD and substance abuse; a focus on ideals; content areas of cognitive, behavioral, interpersonal, and case management; and attention to therapist processes. This approach has been widely recognized for its effectiveness and safety for more than 30 years. Each session addresses both trauma and addiction without delving into detailed narrative of past experiences, making it a practical and accessible option for clients at any level of care.
TRM was developed with an understanding of the automatic, natural defensive responses that occur when faced with a physically or psychologically dangerous situation. More importantly, TRM focuses on the concept of resiliency and how to restore balance to the body and mind after traumatic experiences. With TRM, you’ll learn how to use the skills you were born with to help you move through the past and into a future of recovery.
Somatic Experiencing is a trauma-focused therapy that helps individuals process and heal from trauma by working with the body’s natural stress responses. It emphasizes physical sensations and body awareness to address the impact of trauma, which can disrupt the body’s ability to self-regulate and lead to symptoms like anxiety, hypervigilance, or numbness. By focusing on the body’s natural responses, SomEx supports emotional stability and promotes healing. It is particularly beneficial for those who may not find traditional talk therapy effective.
EMDR is a therapy designed to help individuals heal from trauma by reducing the emotional distress tied to traumatic memories. Using bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements—while recalling trauma, EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories, lessening their emotional impact. This approach is highly effective for conditions like PTSD and anxiety, often providing faster relief than traditional talk therapy.
Therapeutic drumming is an experiential therapy that helps regulate the nervous system and promote neuro-regulation. By engaging in rhythmic and sensory experiences, individuals can reduce stress, improve emotional balance, and support their overall recovery. This therapy complements other experiential therapies at Cumberland Heights, fostering a sense of connection and grounding through rhythm and movement.
KCT is a unique somatic modality inspired by cooperative exercises from the Filipino Martial Arts tradition. It helps to treat anxiety, stress, trauma, and disconnection by integrating neuroscience-based regulation in a non-threatening martial arts tradition. The KCT Rewiring Sequence of “Focus, Flash, Flow” helps to transform the body’s stress responses of “Fight, Flight, and Freeze” in a way that changes our approach to things that used to trigger us. What’s even better? It’s fun! We are fortunate to have the founder of KCT, Mari Giovanni, along with those she has trained, to provide services for our patients.
