What Is Addiction?
Substance Use Disorder (SUD), commonly known as addiction, is defined as “a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry.” Moreover, the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) defines addiction as a chronic, relapsing disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite adverse consequences.
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), more than 110,000 individuals lives were lost to overdose in 2023, making it a leading cause of injury-related death in the United States.
