Can I use the phone?
Phones and other electronic devices can be great ways to connect to loved ones and to others in recovery, as well as to access recovery resources. You can even stay in touch with Cumberland Heights after you leave! During your stay with us, we’ll help you learn how to use these devices in a way that supports your recovery rather than your substance use disorder. As you step out of your normal routine, we’ll also ask that you do the same with your phone and other devices, creating times for use that best support your recovery.
We’ve established the following practices regarding phone and device use:
- Patients entrust us with their phones when they are admitted. Particularly during detoxification, we find that it is best to limit calls to times when staff are present to support you. In fact, we encourage you to make your first call to your family with your primary counselor.
- Once you are feeling better, you’ll be participating in “virtual visitation” using your smart phone. This is a scheduled time to be able to connect with loved ones and new friends in recovery. You’ll have access to land lines in your residential living areas during schedules times as well.
- Your family, of course, will be concerned about you and want to know how you are doing. Our staff will contact them within 24 hours of your admission with an update. In addition, our dedicated family counselors will reach out to them with resources and information about our family services. These will assist your family in recovering with you, as substance use disorder (SUD) affects the whole family.
Can I watch television or listen to music?
Patients can watch television in specific locations when programming is not happening. We also have special times when we may watch movies or sporting events as a group. Each patient will receive a tablet for use while in treatment. These tablets contain information about your treatment experience, as well as recovery resources, which you will hear more about in orientation. The tablets do allow patients to listen to music, but we do ask patients to be aware of the power of music and avoid types of music that focus on substance use or other unhealthy behaviors. Music can be a great tool in recovery when used appropriately.
Can I bring books, magazines, etc.?
In early recovery, you will be engaging with a lot of new material and information. It’s important to keep your focus on that, so we ask that you leave other reading materials at home. The exceptions are books that are considered the sacred literature of spiritual and/or religious traditions. A significant part of recovery is exploring this aspect of your life.
Can I smoke? Buy cigarettes?
Patients are strongly encouraged to quit using tobacco and nicotine products. Vaping is permitted with certain restrictions, and adults who choose to smoke/vape can do so in designated areas only.
No tobacco products or vapes are sold at Cumberland Heights. However, individuals for whom you have signed a release of information and who have been approved by your counselor can drop off or mail these to you. These products must be in their original packaging; in addition, please talk with staff regarding specifics on vape brands. Please note that patients or former patients may not buy each other tobacco products.
Will I have free time?
Although your daily schedule is fairly structured and focused on learning about addiction, recovery, and sober living skills, personal time is built into the schedule. You may spend this time in your room or the community room, talking or playing games with staff or other patients, showering, reading, working on treatment assignments, journaling, napping, etc.

Length of Stay, Travel, and Court Date:
How long will I be here?
The research, as well as Cumberland Heights data, shows that patient outcomes are greatly enhanced with a minimum of 90 days of professional care. This may be a combination of the different programs and levels of care that Cumberland Heights offers – detoxification, residential, 12-Step immersion (see Still Waters), extended care, and outpatient care. Your clinical team will work with you to design a service plan that meets your needs and works for you.
What if I have a court date while I'm in here?
We recommend requesting a postponement of your court date so that you can focus on your recovery; however, we will work with you to do that after you are here. In instances where this is not possible, we will work with you to meet court requirements.
Can I leave campus?
Individuals who are in the detoxification and/or residential levels of care need the support of the 24-hour setting. In order to provide this support, these patients don’t leave campus unless accompanied by a staff member to a community 12 Step meeting, an urgent medical or dental appointment, or in extraordinary circumstances, such as a death in the family. These leaves are approved by the treatment team. In rare instances where a patient needs to leave for an extended period of time, discharge and readmission may be required.
What To Pack:
What should I bring to treatment, and what should I leave at home?
To make your stay as comfortable as possible, we’ve provided some admissions guidelines at the link below, including a list of approved items you can bring with you, and what we recommend leaving at home.
Family Care and Contact:
How should my family get in touch with me?
Family members will receive a call from a staff member within 24 hours of your admission to update them on how you are doing. They will also receive a call from your primary counselor and a member of your family care team. Your family will be given information regarding the virtual visitation schedule for your program so that you can FaceTime with them. They will also receive information on the land lines in your living quarters so that you can sign up to speak with them in that manner as well. If there is an urgent need for your family to reach you, they will receive the direct numbers of your counselor so that you can be reached through them.
Please note that we can only provide information about your presence and how you are doing for those people for whom you have signed a Release of Information. This is to protect your confidentiality.
For any family inquiries, please call our family program line at (615) 432-3191.
When is your family program?
We offer multiple options for our family education program that are in-person and on Zoom. We offer programming on weekdays and weekends. Our family staff contact families (with an active release of information) within 72 hours to schedule their family program.
What are the options for my family and loved ones to learn about the family disease that accompanies substance use disorders?
Cumberland Heights is committed to whole family recovery, not just the recovery of one person. To help families and loved ones learn about substance use disorders and the mental health issues that accompany them, as well as how these impact each family member, we offer a number of services:
- Family Education Programs are offered in-person and via telehealth with convenient weekend options. These programs are a combination of education and sharing with a group of family members who have experienced the same issues that you and your family have. The emphasis is not on the patient; rather, the focus is on helping the family member begin their own recovery process from the trauma of active substance use disorder in the family. The in-person option has the added benefit of a session with the patient and the family.
- Family Education Groups are offered virtually and in-person on a weekly basis on a topic related to early family recovery. Many individuals like to attend a Family Education Program and some Family Education groups.
- Family Alumni Care is a peer-led group experience designed to offer a welcoming and supportive environment for families navigating early recovery, guided by fellow family alumni.
