MI is a collaborative and empowering approach to support clients in behavior change. The goal of MI is to resolve ambivalence and it’s been proven more effective than traditional advice-giving! MI implements client-centered communication skills and directive strategies to work collaboratively with clients on progress toward goals.

MI is an essential tool of strategic and effective communication for helping professionals from multiple industries. MI includes specific methods of engaging effectively with clients or staff at multiple levels to connect clients with their intrinsic motivation to make positive changes. Using MI will increase engagement and enhance collaboration with clients and staff, evoke intrinsic motivation to change, and positively impact client retention, progress & treatment outcomes.

MI is an evidenced based treatment with nearly 2,000 clinical trials that support its efficacy. MI can be used to support clients in working toward behavior change, engagement in services, “rolling with resistance,” crisis intervention, and in brief encounters.
