Melissa's Story:

“The first time I went to Cumberland Heights was to see my father on visitation day. When I went back at 21 to be assessed, I did not think I needed to be there. Though I’d had several blackouts, I saw my dad as someone who struggled with alcoholism, but not myself.

When I hear the kind counselor say, “Melissa, I see you’re hesitant. I also see a lot of pain or loneliness. I’m wondering if you might be willing to stay with us for a few days and see if we can’t help you,” I broke down in tears. For the first time in my life, somebody noticed how much pain I was carrying, and I agreed to stay.

Those 28 days had such a profound impact on my life that I switched from nursing school to pursue a career in the field. I interned at Cumberland Heights while I trained to be a counselor. Years later, I was given the opportunity to serve at Director of the Women’s Program, a position I held for 10 years.

Before recovery, I was just existing. I didn’t know how lost I was. The support I found at Cumberland Heights and the gifts of the program keep me grounded, help me feel more alive, and motivate me to do the work I do. Cumberland Heights not only saved my life but also gave me the opportunity to help others on a deeper level, just like I was helped at 21.”
