Program Description:
This workshop will invite each participant on a journey to examine the joys, challenges, and pitfalls of working with clients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Attendees will be guided through various explorations of the complex condition known as addiction, looking specifically at the role of family, personal biases, and assumptions. Participants will also be introduced to the latest information regarding how to care for themselves and each other while doing this work. 

 Learning objectives:

  1. Cite current literature on the key factors of addiction
  2. Describe the typology of addiction and the myths of what it is not
  3. Identify personal biases, assumptions, and barriers to recovery
  4. Explain the role of the family in the disease and in recovery
  5. Identify at least 2 risk factors and 2 protective factors in addiction
  6. Identify evidence-based interventions and best practices for effective outcomes 

Presenter Bios:

Mai Ferrell is an accomplished therapist based in Nashville, TN. With a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from UTC and an MSSW from the University of Tennessee, College of Social Work, Mai began her journey in 2005 to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives. Throughout her career, Mai has passionately worked with individuals of all age groups, providing compassionate care for those dealing with mental illness and substance use disorders. As of June 1, 2023, she has taken on the role of Clinical Director at Cedar Recovery. Drawing from her diverse experiences, Mai excels in educating therapists on effective strategies for supporting individuals with co-occurring disorders. Beyond her professional endeavors, she remains an active and engaged member of the community. 

Mai serves as the Vice President of the Board of Directors with the Coalition for Black Social Workers, advocating for meaningful change and inclusion. Additionally, she contributes her expertise as an advisory board member for W.E. C.A.R.E. Rutherford, further strengthening community support networks. With a deep commitment to improving lives and a unique blend of expertise in psychology and social work, Mai Ferrell continues to be a driving force in creating positive change for those she serves.

Karen Moran, CEO and founder of Karen Moran Counseling in Nashville, Tennessee, has actively promoted wellness and recovery for over thirty years. Recognized for her specialized skills and expertise with individuals and families with substance abuse disorders, Karen also has also provided clinical supervision to over 100 clinicians, spanning over 25 agencies. She also cofacilitates 8 Domain training with Pleiades Clinical Consulting. 

For the last twelve years, Karen has helped countless individuals, couples, and families heal through her counseling and consulting practice. She has also been featured on Positive Sobriety and Therapist Theater Podcasts. She has also partnered with local professionals and members of the recovery community on a documentary film about the stigma of substance use disorders and its effect on treatment and recovery.  Karen was recognized and honored by her colleagues in 2014 with the MTAADAC and TAADAC Counselor of the Year and in 2022 with the MTAADAC and TAADAC Professional of the Year. She is a Qualified Clinical Supervisor and level II Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. Karen shares her knowledge and expertise in workshops, training venues and keynote addresses.
