Step 3Step 3 – Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

Even with a strong spiritual background and lifetime of regularly attending church, I was not able to grasp the concept of “letting go, and letting God,” until I found Al-Anon. In the First Step I easily admitted I was completely powerless over alcohol and the alcoholic in my life, and in the Second Step I knew that only through God could my sanity hopefully be restored. But in the Third Step it finally made sense that a Higher Power, who could restore me, could also be trusted to direct me if I was simply willing to turn my life over to Him.

For the first time in my life I know I do not have to solve my problems alone, but can trust God to lead me and direct my path. I practice this daily by asking God for help, releasing all the things I can’t solve on my own to Him, reciting the Serenity Prayer, and knowing the outcome is in His hands.

Now when I am in church, I pray God will be with me this day and throughout the week and I will be the person He intended me to be. This gives me a sense of relief and release to know it is not all up to me. I feel my faith has been elevated to a level I had not even imagined existed. Thankfully, as I end each day at Cumberland Heights and drive through the gates, the last thing I see is the arch reminding me once again to “Let go and let God.”
